Divorce

‘Whoever sends his wife away, let him give her a certificate of divorce’; but I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except for the reason of unchastity, makes her commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.  Matthew 5:31 & 32 NASB

It is always important take Scripture as presented and not read other meanings into a passage.  Here Jesus is not authorizing divorce.  On the contrary, Jesus will later say that marriage is a lifelong commitment regardless of the circumstances.

If a wife already has had sex outside of marriage, she has already committed adultery.  If a wife is divorced without infidelity (sex outside of marriage), the divorce will cause her to become an adulterous.

Marriage and divorce are primary topics discussed throughout the New Testament.  Looking at Matthew 5:31 and 32 without considering the other passages regarding divorce can result in error.  A good source providing a comprehensive look at Christ’s Commandments regarding marriage and divorce is Holy Matrimony: The Image of God in the Family by Dr. Steven W. Waterhouse, Westcliff Press, Amarillo Texas.
